FUTURELAB (GBR)
Project-ImageProject-ImageProject-Image

Futurelab is passionate about transforming the way people learn. Tapping into the huge potential offered by digital and other technologies, they develop innovative resources and practices that support new approaches to learning for the 21st century.
Through their research and development of projects they aim to put innovative ideas into practice by providing space for experimentation and creating prototypes.

Previous prototype projects include:
Savannah: an adventure game in which a virtual space is mapped onto a real space. Children 'play' at being lions in a savannah, navigating the augmented environments with a mobile handheld device.
Fizzees (Physical Electronic Energisers): in which young people care for a 'digital pet' through their own physical actions.

They bring a strong ethic of user-centred design to the development of new technologies for learning, involving learners as co-designers and co-researchers of learning experiences from the initial concept onwards. They see the process of design as involving the redesign of learning environments, in which they develop not only digital resources but the pedagogic strategies and other resources required to create an effective learning environment.

Futurelab are currently undertaking work on the theme of Digital Inclusion, in which we will be addressing two critical questions:

* In what ways can the design and use of digital technologies promote educational equality?
* How can we address the new educational divides emerging in digitally rich societies?

Outputs from this programme will provide resources and guidance to policy makers, learning institutions, networks and practitioners, and the educational, technology, media and creative industries.

Design for Social Justice’ forms one strand of this work and will explore and develop ideas about how to design practices and technology to promote social justice. This will result in a handbook of guidance for practitioners.

Developments will appear on our website as and when they happen.
