THIRD WORLD FARMER (DEN)
Project-ImageProject-ImageProject-Image

3rd World Farmer is a new kind of game. An experiment in the genre of Serious Games, it simulates the real-world mechanisms that cause and sustain poverty in developing countries.
In 3rd World Farmer, players get to manage their own African farm where they are soon confronted with the often-difficult choices that poverty and conflict necessitate. The game is effective in making such issues relevant to a wider audience, which is due to the fact that players tend to invest their hopes in a character whose fate depends on them. Therefore, the injustices that players experience themselves in a virtual setting, rather than simply being told about them, provoke a deeper and more personal reflection on the issues.

This game has the potential to be an eye-opener to people who have become somewhat immune to the plight of third world poverty as communicated by traditional means. The designers’ aim is to have everybody play the game, reflect, discuss and act on it. Unlike many other educational games, 3rd World Farmer manages to find a balance between playability and the seriousness of the theme. As a result, it is an ideal starting point for discussions related to developing-world issues. This is supported by the fact that it has become a popular and valuable resource for many teachers in the classroom.

Although the current version of the game is finished and fully playable, the creators will continue to develop the game.
