Maternova is a web-based innovation platform focused on maternal/neonatal health: Maternova tracks, promotes and prioritizes low-cost tools that have the potential to save lives in developing countries. Their goal is to create an online marketplace for these ideas and tools that save lives - connecting designers, engineers, clinicians, aid workers and citizens around the fight to more rapidly save maternal and newborn lives.
Maternova believes that in order to save more mothers and newborns we need more innovation at multiple levels, and that these new ideas must be organized and tracked in a user-friendly manner. Innovation needs to happen at the systems level, in logistics, in training, in products and in design. The project aims to help take these ideas out of the exclusive domain of a few elite foundation staff and to crowdsource the ideas, the solutions and the priorities. Maternova has received some Macarthur Foundation funding for one small project and SEV.EN funding for the initial conceptual development of the site. They were also just recognized by the Changemakers/Ashoka contest 'Healthy Mothers, Strong World' as an early winner. They see contracts with specific partners as one way to continue to expand our social enterprise and are also going to enter into e-commerce to package and sell some of the innovations they feature.
