Fractured communities need a catalyst to help them thrive. Harringay Online uses the digital medium of a social network to connect people in the London neighbourhood of Harringay and to create a buzzing online community. But the real change happens when people connected online meet face-to-face.
Harringay Online was set up in the summer of 2007 as an experiment in using newly available media rich digital tools to create connections within a community of about 15,000 people. The transition from connection to co-operation and collaboration is gradually creating real change on the ground.
2009 is bringing a street festival involving the closure of one of north London's main arterial routes. A wide range of community network weaving techniques are being planned including the involvement of local artists planning experiments with online and real-world art as a medium for building awareness of neighbourliness. The project has also started a, now council backed, community generated neighbourhood visioning workstream.
