Global Village School is an international school that welcomes students from around the globe and that offers a progressive, accredited, customizable K-12 homeschooling program via online and text-based curriculum, complete with individualized teacher services. Their curriculum integrates peace, justice, and diversity studies with the core subjects.
Global Village School is a distance learning program, based in southern California, which means that students study at home (or, in special cases, at learning centers). Students are in regular contact with their teachers. They send their work via regular mail or e-mail, and can also contact their teachers by phone (or meet in person if they live locally). Students take a regular course load and high school students earn credits towards a diploma. Transcripts are provided so that students can apply to colleges of their choice.
Global Village believes that students learn best when they are fully engaged in their studies. Self-directed learning is encourage rather than trying to make everyone study in the same way. Curriculum are customized based on student interests, needs, and learning styles. They believe in engaging students in studies that inspire inquiry, encourage communication, and foster cooperation. Their aim is to endeavor to support the development of thoughtful, compassionate and aware people who will provide a constructive and hopeful foundation for future generations.
Global Village students form a diverse group coming from many different regions and backgrounds. Some choose this alternative way of learning because they are budding young activists yearning for a school that supports them in their concern for the world. Others select it because their former schools were not able to meet their individual needs and learning styles. Many have been given various diagnoses such as ADD, ADHD, etc., yet they flourish in this supportive homeschool environment. Some want a more challenging curriculum; others wish to be free to work at their own pace, or to have time to focus on passions such as art, music, theater, and sports. Some students experience harassment at school for one reason or another; they choose to homeschool with Global Village because it provides a safe, affirming environment that supports them in being who they truly are.
