On August 18, 2007, The Next American City Magazine hosted its first 24hrRoadTrip project in Philadelphia, PA. Three guides – Scott Gabriel Knowles, Calvin Johnson, and Kurt Braunohler – and 20 fellow travelers experienced Philadelphia for 24 straight hours with the goal of capturing the dynamics of the city and discovering what people do and when they do it. Five people stick it out for the entire 24 hours, and another 12 were there for 20 out of 24 hours, with a peak crowd of 20 people around 4 a.m.
The group explored the underground holding cells at Fort Miflin, walked to the city boundaries on City Avenue, played at Pretzel Park in Manayunk, had some drinks in South Philly, made TastyKake castles on Penn's Landing, napped on benches in Rittenhouse Square and picnicked at the future site of Philadelphia's skatepark ... and all in 24 hours!
In the link below you can check out their schedule for a detailed account of their whereabouts and then flip through the photo album, read some spur-of-the-moment poetry and watch some live footage.
