The Upasana Design Studio is a part of Auroville, a spiritual community in the South of India, founded by The Mother of Sri Aurobindo Ashram, in 1968. It is a place for creative adventure and self discovery through the rich tapestry of traditional Indian textiles, a field of karmayoga, as well as other self-initiated project using local knowledge and crafts.
The Upasana Design Studio was initiated in 1997 by Uma Prajapati, a graduate from the National Institute of Fashion Technology, in New Delhi.
Their many projects with the local community as well as with visitors to Auroville included the manufacture of 13000 thousand hand crafted products made as New Year gift ("Gifts for a cause"), recycling seminars, textile workshops, a campaign against throwaway plastic bags ("Small Steps") and Tsunamika, a crafters response to the tsunami, with many villagers around Auroville having been affected.
The word UPASANA is a verb that stands for a way of loving and serving the One who dwells in all, the Supreme Self, the Soul of the Universe.
