DESIGN 21: Social Design Network, a partnership
with UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organization), is an online platform for design that specifically
responds to social, humanitarian and environmental needs. Around the
world designers of all disciplines, non-profit organizations and anyone
curious about design and social issues can join the Network for free.
Design21sdn.com is a place where members can connect, learn about each
other’s work, share ideas and resources, collaborate on projects and
address social concerns through design competitions and forums.
The website and community is based on a definition of social design that refers to design in its traditional sense, meaning the shaping of products. The word social indicates a general inclination towards sustainability, social consciousness. Thus, the purpose of the initiative is to promote social awareness in the field of design. It is done by providing a space with various tools for communication between the relevant parties.
The symbol of this community is the Allumonde ring (depicted above), which is sold to support non-profit organizations and the UNESCO DREAM Centers in post-conflict regions around the world.
