Needles are often reused without being sterilized. Used syringes are
being picked up from trash by poor adults and children with re-sell
intentions. Poor handling of medical sharps brings great danger - not
only to the health workers, but to the society all over the World.
The WHO recommends best practices in health care by segregate sharps at point of use. The Antivirus sharps container is designed to do this. A plastic cap clicks on an emptied beverage can, and it transforms into a permanently sealed sharps container. Antivirus separates and isolates the needle securely in the can.
3rd World issues have always been a part of the creator of Antivirus, Han Pham. She grew up in this part of the world where poverty and hunger were a natural part of the daily life. Therefore, social and moral responsibilities have a direct impact on her - both as a designer and as a person.
According to Médecins Sans Frontières, Health Care Waste Management is a huge problem in developing countries, because the systems for disposing of medical waste are weak. The problem is still growing. Han has worked closely with Dr. MD. Annelie Ginzel, a life long MSF member, through the entire process. Her extensive knowledge has been a great contribution to Han’s goal; to design a realistic and sustainable product that could be implemented here and now.
